Our Orthotists at The Treatment Hub in Hamilton near Glasgow
are qualified to assess and prescribe Ankle Foot Orthoses
(Orthotics), sometimes known as calipers or splints or
often abbreviated to AFO. The Orthotist can design
the AFO to be custom made to
ensure the AFO fits perfectly, and are designed
and prescribed specifically for an individual instead of generic
stock Ankle Foot Orthoses (Orthotics) often used
elsewhere.
To make our AFO's we use the latest materials including plastics
and carbon fibre to make closely fitting, accurately
prescribed AFO's/calipers to ensure we provide the best possible
outcome for our patients.
An additional part of our service at The Treatment Hub in Hamilton
near Glasgow is that we also have our own workshop where we
can adjust, repair and refurbish AFO's while patient's wait or
require some adjustments to ensure the AFO is perfectly fitted
and functions to it's best.
What are Ankle Foot Orthoses
(AFO's)?
AFO is the newer and
abbreviated description used for Ankle Foot orthotics or
orthoses. Previously, people would know these as being
described as splints, braces or calipers. AFO's
are designed to influence the foot, ankle, knee and hip for a
variety of degenerative or neurological conditions to either
aid mobility, prevent pain or to prevent deformity due to these
conditions.
Historically, AFO's would have been made from
metal and leather. AFO's nowadays are more likely to be made from
more modern materials, with Orthotist's more likely to
prescribe and supply AFO's to be made from plastic or sometimes
carbon fibre.
